Computer Security Basics

Computer security basics are easy to set up on your computer and will reduce the risk that you are hacked or that your computer receives a virus. Here are some computer security basics.

There are three computer security basics that are sure to help almost anyone with a computer.

1. Make sure you have an anti-virus program.

It is extremely important to have an updated anti-virus program running on your computer at all times. Most anti-virus programs not only look for viruses, but check for Trojans, Spyware and other malware that can affect your computer or allow your computer to be hacked. Computer security basics are tools that are easily implemented that can maximize your protection. Anti-virus software definitely gives you the most protection for the buck.

2. Never give out personal or financial information on the web through emails.

Computer security basics include avoiding spoof emails. Many spoof emails allow hackers to steal your personal and financial information. Most spoof emails come in the form of emails that look identical to Ebay, Paypal and large banks. They usually ask you to update your account by clicking a link. Today, no legitimate company asks you in an email to update your account via a link in an email. If you think the email is legit, close the email and access the web site. Once on the web site, you can see if a message was sent to you. Never give out any information through a link or an email.

3. Change your password frequently.

Computer security basics also include changing your password frequently. Make sure your change your password each month or even every week if the data you are protecting is critical. Don’t choose easy passwords and use small and large caps to make it difficult for hackers to figure out. So keep in mind these computer security basics to protect yourself and your computer.
